Should We Require `Fire-Safe' Smokes?
For almost a century, public debate about fire safety and cigarettes has included discussions about making "fire-safe" cigarettes, which use special banded papers that are self-extinguishing unless a smoker puffs on them. For decades, attempts to pass federal and state laws mandating the sale of fire-safe cigarettes failed, despite claims that unattended cigarettes spark fires that kill an average of 700 to 900 people nationwide each year.

Lucky Strike

Lucky Strike cigarettes are manufactured by the American Tobacco Company. This brand of cigarette was first produced in the year 1916. The original Lucky Strikes were non-filtered cigarettes. As the demand for filtered cigarettes increased, the company began producing the filtered variety in the 1960’s. The competition was tough, as there were already many other cigarette brands which already captured the filtered cigarette market. When Lucky Strikes were first manufactured, they were packaged quite differently than the packaging you will see today. The first containers were dark green in color and had a special message on them. The letters L.S./M.F. T. were printed on all packs, these initials stood for the message: Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco. When World War I began, the company decided to change the appearance of the cigarette. They switched it to the white box with red and white logo that is still so popular today. The logo was created by and industrial designer named Raymond Loewy and it caught on very quickly. When cigarette advertising was still legal in the United States, Lucky Strike commercials could be seen on television. There slogan was geared toward young men and it stated: Lucky Strike separates the men from the boys, but not from the girls. This type of cigarette is made from some of the most premium blend of Turkish tobacco and is considered a premium cigarette. Lucky Strikes are offered as regular strength and as Lights.
