Next cigarette is manufactured by the Philip Morris Tobacco Company. Next was introduced to the public in the year 1989 as a virtually nicotine-free cigarette. This cigarette was created as a test product to see if the smoking population would respond to its features. This initially caused quite a stir, as many people were searching for such a product. It was marketed as having the same flavor as a regular cigarette. Supposedly, the nicotine was removed using a high-pressure carbon dioxide. The process of eliminating the nicotine was told to be similar to that used to decaffeinate coffee. The nickname for Next was “De-nic”. The product did not live up to the high expectations because there was much debate that the cigarettes did indeed contain low levels of nicotine and that the smokers would only begin to crave more and more of them. Sales of the product then decreased to a point of almost no sales. In some international companies where people smoked Marlboro and other brands, certain taxes pushed the prices of those cigarettes so high, that people turn to the Next cigarette. It was known to be a watered-down version of the ever popular Marlboro cigarette. Next cigarettes admittedly had slight defects in the wrapping paper. Even with the defects, the paper was still known to be strong and durable.
