Pall Mall cigarettes that are sold in the United States are manufactured by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Those that are sold outside of the States are manufactured by the British American Tobacco Company. They were originally manufactured by the Butler & Butler Company since the year 1899; however R.J. Reynolds took over the production in 1907. This cigarette went through some changes, as R.J. Reynolds decided to use the Pall Mall to test a new design for cigarettes. They made a decision to create the cigarettes with the length of 85 millimeters, that decision proved to be a very good one, as all king size cigarettes now follow that length. After that change was implemented, the company decided to test a new kind technology of tobacco filling. The new accomplishment was said to greatly decrease the harshness that can occur in throats from smoking. In the year 1960, Pall Mall was in it’s time of great popularity, and at that time it was the best selling cigarette brand in the United States. Because sales were so high, the company decided to try one more change. They produced longer Pall Malls as well, with the length of 100 millimeters. In the year 1994, Pall Mall production changed to the company of Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation. They did not market the product well, and in 2004, ownership went back to the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. This cigarette is known to be a premium brand, mostly purchase by people in the higher-class salary range. They are still sold in the non-filter variety, which had always been popular and they now offer filtered Pall Malls as well.
