Should We Require `Fire-Safe' Smokes?
For almost a century, public debate about fire safety and cigarettes has included discussions about making "fire-safe" cigarettes, which use special banded papers that are self-extinguishing unless a smoker puffs on them. For decades, attempts to pass federal and state laws mandating the sale of fire-safe cigarettes failed, despite claims that unattended cigarettes spark fires that kill an average of 700 to 900 people nationwide each year.

Salem

Salem cigarettes are manufactured by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. This brand was created in the year 1956. Salem cigarettes are a menthol cigarette, which separates it from most other brands which have varieties of menthols but do not focus on producing this one variety. The R.J. Reynolds Company was founded and established its first production company in the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the United States. It is for that reason that the company decided to take the name from the street of its first establishment and apply it to this cigarette. The Salem cigarette was the very first filtered menthol cigarette that was produced. For many decades, this brand was the number one top seller in the United States for menthol varieties. In an attempt to keep the cigarette popular with its audience, in the 1990’s the manufacturer decided to redesign its packaging. Part of the new redesign was a feature called a sliding pack. In addition, it attempted to see if changing the filter to the color green would boost its popularity. Salem cigarettes are a strong seller in the United States and places high on the list of cigarette demands. Salem is considered to be a premium cigarette and are made with high quality blends of tobacco. Salem cigarettes are very popular with smokers who desire a quality cigarette while having the pleasuring taste of menthol. Salem cigarettes come in a variety of styles, including Regulars and Lights.
