Virginia Slim cigarettes are manufactured by the Phillip Morris Tobacco Company. This particular brand of cigarette was first created in 1968, making it a rather new in comparison to some of the brands that have been around for decades. The purpose of creating the Virginia Slim was to directly market the young female smoking population. With so many cigarettes offering only certain varieties sprung off of their main product that would appeal to a woman, the Phillip Morris company was determined to create a cigarette that would be sold only to females. They were successful in their endeavor, because they created the Virginia Slim to have the qualities that were so appealing to the female customer. The first and most important feature is the shape of the cigarette. This brand is only made in the Slim variety, which offers a cigarette far thinner than a regular brand. In addition, it created the cigarette to be longer than most. This served two purposes. The first agenda to meet was the need for an elegant cigarette that would have a feminine quality to it, the length of the Virginia Slim met that standard. Secondly, the fact that the cigarette is narrow and long makes for a cigarette that produces far less smoke than a regular brand. The smaller amount of smoke is thought to be more classy and elegant for women who wish to appear feminine while still enjoying their cigarettes. The Virginia Slims are made in two different lengths, the 100 millimeter and 120 millimeter varieties. This brand also offers Ultra Lights and Menthols. The packaging is also geared toward capturing a woman’s attention, as it is packaged in a white box with multiple colored stripes designed into the side of the box.
